Vista Tips (which I follow and use)

Vista Tips (which I follow and use)

Assuming your machine hardware is Vista ready and you have genuine Vista...

1. Make sure you have up todate with Vista patches (SP2 : as of today) (www.windowsupdate.com)

2. On your desktop disable gadgets on your right.

3. Make sure you have a updated Virus scannner and machine is virus free. (Free Avira / AVG / Avast will do the job or trend micro systems..)

4. Download Windows System Care and clean your PC (spywares, fine tune registry, clear log/temp files)

5. If you have bloated Yahoo or any thirdparty toolbar (google is fine) remove it.

6. Make sure you are not loading too many softwares on startup. (Load them as and when you need)

7. Using http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ remove the junk or 30 days softwares.

8. Don't visit any "unwanted" sites which will mess your PC. (for cracking softwares)

9. Apart from windows update, please check BIOS / Driver updates from manufacturer. Ex: http://support.dell.com, http://support.hp.com. Some firmwares may not be compatible, for which they release regular patches.

10. If simple applications like Yahoo Messenger crash, check the Event Log (Control Panel > Admin Tools), regarding the error message. Yahoo messenger even crashes when you have incompatible Flash Plugin.

11. Also check for Flash / Java / Silverlight / Real / Windows Player patches.

I think my issue is mainly because of Point 2 and 6. Need to ask someone to try this back home. I do have Avira and no issues on point 7 and 8.

The frequent message box pop ups (user access control?) is my annoyance. Second, I cannot use my CISCO work vpn; other office related connectivity issues :(

Its simple

Control Panel > Users > Select User > Turn Off UAC (see link below)

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista/

What is the problem with CISCO? Installing or Executing ? Have you tried to run the application as Administrator ?

(Right click on the shortcut / executable and select Run as Administrator)

Let me know whether these things work.
